I own a former version of this lens. It is an autofocus lens and it can be used in manual focus mode. This one has a better grip on the focusing ring. This lens is built robust and the results are excellent. I keep it with me in case of serious sharpness is needed or there is not enough light to handhold. Stopping down a few stops will give better results. I don't have the 1.4 version but the results are said to be the same after f:2.8.
